Sometimes, the intended function of a room just doesn't work. This
large room was built to be a living room at one end and a family room at
the other. In this and the below "Before" photos, you can see
that the homeowner attempted to decorate the two rooms as they were designed,
by placing the large sectional, matching chair, rug and coffee table in
the living room half and, well, nothing in the family room half! Her question:
Can this be decorated as one big great room?

The answer? Of course, it can! By breaking up the sectional, changing
out the 6x6 plain rug for a 10x14 contemporary one, and anchoring a
gorgeous entertainment center in the middle of the room, it became
one stunning "WOW" room! Other changes included recovering
the sectional back cushions from a dated floral print to a more contemporary
block print, and the addition of just two more upholstered chairs and
two new end tables. Lighting was boosted with the addition of two table
lamps and the replacement of an awkward ceiling fan to a more subdued
fixture. Note the pop you get with the addition of a deep plum paint
color just on the angled fireplace wall. Dramatic, contemporary accessories
completed this remarkable transformation.
